  1. AutoCAD 2.5, released in June 1986, was the first version in the US and Canada to require a hardware lock. Responding to user complaints, Autodesk sent all customers AutoCAD 2.52, which removed the lock.
  2. The program that became AutoCAD was created by Mike Riddle, and was originally called " Interact". Its name was changed to " microCAD," but when another company had already created a program with that same name, it was renamed " AutoCAD".
  3. The company we now know as Autodesk was founded by 17 friends and acquaintances in John Walker's home in Mill Valley, CA, who pooled $59,000 to fund the startup. Today, Autodesk has a market capitalization of nearly $13 billion.
  4. The company Autodesk was originally named Marin Software Partners, a partnership among the 17 founders.
  5. Did you know that many AutoCAD releases had code-names? Although AutoCAD Release 9 was often referred to as " The White Album" (after the Beatles double album that included the song Revolution 9.) 
  6. One of the company's first products was a filing program called "Cardfile". First shown at the 6th West Coast Computer Faire, it was renamed "the Autodesk". By then, the company was calling itself Desktop Solutions, but when the founders filed paperwork to become a California corporation, they changed the company name to Autodesk.
  7. In the fall of 1982, the most popular version of AutoCAD was one that ran on the Victor 9000 computer.

  9. AutoCAD 2009 marked a major milestone with the introduction of the ribbon interface, the InfoCenter, Quick Properties, the ViewCube and Steering wheels, the Action Recorder and a modeless layer Manager.
  10. AutoCAD R13 as the most hated release of AutoCAD when first introduced in November 1994. It was so buggy that the company soon shipped the first in a series of incremental updates in an attempt to quash the problems.
