10 Little Known Facts About Autodesk and AutoCAD

10 Little Known Facts About Autodesk and AutoCAD

  1. AutoCAD 2.5, released in June 1986, was the first version in the US and Canada to require a hardware lock. Responding to user complaints, Autodesk sent all customers AutoCAD 2.52, which removed the lock.
  2. The program that became AutoCAD was created by Mike Riddle, and was originally called " Interact". Its name was changed to " microCAD," but when another company had already created a program with that same name, it was renamed " AutoCAD".
  3. The company we now know as Autodesk was founded by 17 friends and acquaintances in John Walker's home in Mill Valley, CA, who pooled $59,000 to fund the startup. Today, Autodesk has a market capitalization of nearly $13 billion.
  4. The company Autodesk was originally named Marin Software Partners, a partnership among the 17 founders.
  5. Did you know that many AutoCAD releases had code-names? Although AutoCAD Release 9 was often referred to as " The White Album" (after the Beatles double album that included the song Revolution 9.)
  6. One of the company's first products was a filing program called "Cardfile". First shown at the 6th West Coast Computer Faire, it was renamed "the Autodesk". By then, the company was calling itself Desktop Solutions, but when the founders filed paperwork to become a California corporation, they changed the company name to Autodesk.
  7. In the fall of 1982, the most popular version of AutoCAD was one that ran on the Victor 9000 computer.

  8. Desktop Solutions paid $1,200 for its booth at the 6th West Coast Computer Faire (March 1982), perhaps the best marketing investment ever made by a company in the software industry.
  9. AutoCAD 2009 marked a major milestone with the introduction of the ribbon interface, the InfoCenter, Quick Properties, the ViewCube and Steering wheels, the Action Recorder and a modeless layer Manager.
  10. AutoCAD R13 as the most hated release of AutoCAD when first introduced in November 1994. It was so buggy that the company soon shipped the first in a series of incremental updates in an attempt to quash the problems.

How to Save AutoCAD Drawing as Read Only

man working in laptop

How to Save Auto-CAD Drawing as Read Only – is quite a difficult way to answer. The only way to answer this question is by giving different options for the user to Save Auto-CAD Drawing as Read Only. Let’s see some of them below.

Save Auto-CAD Drawing as Read Only
Some of the different methods are listed below please choose which is appropriate in your case.

Method 1 – Use Save As Auto-CAD Drawing Files as DXF (Drawing Interchange Format, or Drawing Exchange Format is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk), by this method you actually prevent the user to make any changes to your drawing files. Making the Drawing as Read-Only Files

Method 2 – Ideally you could right click on the drawing file icon (once saved), go to properties and tick read only. Ahh, well that doesn’t “lock” the drawing or anything. they can still edit it, do a Save As, or simply unchecked the Read Only option for the file once they have it.

Method 3 – In case you are on a Network, you can request your Network Administrator to make a READ only Folder and put all the files into it – Eg., READ capabilities but not WRITE capabilities. that way it’ll never be altered, and the file can still be used for Inserting blocks. However, here if you use the explode blocks this will come back into action.

Method 4 – Although there are different ways to do a Read Only format, one simple method is to have your Auto-CAD Drawing converted into a PDF file, there by making all your Auto-CAD Drawings Read-Only Mode as you cannot edit the Pdf files and can open in a standard acrobat reader.

Method 5 –  Use Save As Auto Cad Drawing Files as DWF (Design Web Format), The sole purpose of DWF is to allow designers, engineers, project managers, and their colleagues to communicate design information and design content to anyone needing to view, review, or print design information – without these team members needing to know Auto-CAD or other design software. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_Web_Format
